While outlawed by the morality of the Aluminat church, sorcery remains
a powerful force. High born sorcerers study at the Guild, learning the
secrets that will bend the universe to their will. Only such licensed
practitioners are considered 'proper' magicians and the church keeps
a watchful eye on them. However, sorcery is not only for the gentry.
The rookeries are full of low class 'petty magicians' who are the heirs
to the rural traditions of hedge magic, now twisted with the grime of
the city.
Some
people need no training to manifest the magical arts. These 'mediums'
have a variety of strange powers to reach into the lands of the dead
and command the forces of entropy. The church finds it difficult to
differentiate between such people and some of their own faithful who
are capable of incredible miracles, so they leave well alone.
In the darker places the magic that
the church truly fears still remains. Necromancers seek power over life
and death and Demonists foolishly make pacts with the forces of entropy.
The church tries to convince itself these terrors were destroyed in
the wars of faith, but in the shadows the necromancers and demonists
remain, awaiting the great alignment of the planes and the final war
against heaven.
